Tree

The first Tree album

'Tree' is Kevin Hunt - piano and keyboards, Steve Hunter - electric bass, David Jones - drums. The group began its life in mid 1995 as the Steve Hunter Trio but as the musical chemistry became more obvious, so did the commitment, and it became the three-way cooperative now known as 'Tree' in late 1995.

Although appearences are rare these days, Tree still turns up at a Festival or club here and there.

" 'Jazz is like a tree... with deep roots in the ground, searching for new nourishment and providing a solid foundation, at the same time extending itself skyward as far as possible.' I couldn't think of a better definition of 'Tree'. I don't normally like electronic instruments very much, except when Kevin Hunt plays them. He seeks out different colours as if different instruments in an orchestra. I don't normally like the electric bass very much, but Steve Hunter is 'the boss'. David Jones is a matchless percussionist. Three masters creating amazing and entertaining jazz."
[Jim Mcleod - Twenty Four Hours Magazine]
"The mood swings from serene to cheeky to explosive... the common denominator is the ravishing, chocolate-sounding bass, the endlessly inventive drumming and the quirky good-humoured and impassioned keyboard playing. Ambient minimalism, spanish extravaganzas, pastoral serenity and thumping funk happily cohabit in the repertoire"
[John Shand - Sydney Morning Herald]
