Steve started writing in 1976 and has written around 350 compositions, with over 100 now having been released on various albums.  There are also a number of bands around the country that play and record his music and songs. He has also written music for several short films.

In 1986 he wrote the music for the natural childbirth documentary 'Labour of Love' which is still being shown on television around the world.

He has twice been a winner in the 'Australian Jazz Action Society' composition competition.

Steve's composition 'Reason' (from the Nine Lives album) was in the final nominations for an award in the Jazz composition category, in the 2001 APRA awards.

His song "Pray in your own way" from the Local World album made the final nominations for the same APRA award in 2002.

In 2003 Steve was awarded a prestigious two-year artist fellowship from the Music Board of the Australian Arts Council.

Outside of his seven albums released as a leader, Steve's compositions feature on albums by Indra Lesmana, Playdiem, Guy Strazzullo, Tree, Hong Kong Meeting, Mosaic, Matt McMahon, The Translators, The Subterraneans, Damian Wright and The Kim Lawson Trio.
